Real Talk With a Utiva Graduate: Chinazorom

By Nathanie Ike

Let’s meet you (Your Name, What You do, where you currently work)

My name is Chinazorm Onyegbuchulem and I work as a Media and Marketing Communications Strategist at Microvest.

Can you tell us about your career journey and what led you to enroll in the Product Marketing course?

In a nutshell, I started my career as a digital marketing generalist, did it for a while, and wanted something more streamlined and challenging.

I wanted to switch to what I like to call soft Tech (Product Marketing), and when I was researching, Utiva came highly recommended.

How did your experience at the Utiva Product Marketing School shape your approach to marketing and communication in your current role?

It did a lot as it gave me a soft landing in my current role as the Head of Media and Marketing Communication at Microvest, a Fintech company.

What specific skills or knowledge from the Utiva Product Marketing course have benefited your position at Microvest most?

The Go-to-Market strategy I learned from the Utiva Product Marketing course has been incredibly impactful in my role at Microvest.

It has equipped me with the tools and insights needed to effectively launch new products and services, target the right audience, and position our offerings in a way that resonates with customers.

This strategic approach has not only streamlined our product launches but also significantly improved our market penetration and customer engagement.

What challenges did you face when transitioning from your coursework at Utiva to a leadership role in marketing, and how did you overcome them?

Transitioning from my coursework at Utiva to a leadership role in marketing at Microvest presented a few challenges. Here are 3 major aspects of these challenges:

  • Translating theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios
  • Managing large teams and developing and implementing a strategic vision for our marketing efforts.

I overcame these by solving one challenge at a time, seeking mentorship from people who have worked the path and continuously learning (especially on YouTube) and retooling my skills.

As the Head of Media and Marketing Communications at Microvest, what are your primary responsibilities?

As the Head of Media and Marketing Communications at Microvest, my primary responsibilities include:

Developing and Implementing Marketing Strategies, Media Planning and Buying Relations, Overseeing Content Creation, Brand Management, and PR and Team leadership.

These responsibilities align closely with what I learned, particularly in areas such as Go-to-Market strategies, market research, onboarding, and Messaging. The practical skills and strategic insights gained from the course have been instrumental in effectively managing campaigns, driving engagement, and achieving our marketing objectives at Microvest.

Can you share an example of a successful marketing campaign you led at Microvest and how the principles learned played a role in its success?

We recently launched a social product on the Microvest App, MiSocial, the goal is to connect savers and subscribers into homogenous groups where they share different experiences about their financial journey in a relaxed atmosphere. Some of the major strategies we used for the product launch were part of the things I learned during my course study at Utiva.

What current trends in media and marketing communications do you find most exciting, and how are you incorporating them into your work at Microvest?

I'm thrilled by the current trends in media and marketing communications, particularly the seamless integration of AI tools, personalization messaging, and the emphasis on customer-centricity.

Additionally, the rising significance of visual content and interactive experiences is incredibly exciting, especially for a business like ours.

At Microvest, we're fully embracing these trends by harnessing data-driven strategies to deliver personalized messaging and creating captivating, interactive content that enriches user engagement.

What advice would you give to current Utiva students or recent graduates who aspire to achieve a leadership role in marketing?

The space is a very fluid one, to stay relevant you have to keep retooling your skill. Remember YouTube is your friend.

What are your future professional goals, and how do you plan to continue leveraging your product marketing expertise to achieve them?

My future professional goals include advancing my skills in my current role and product marketing in particular. I plan to leverage my marketing expertise by staying updated on industry trends and expanding my skill set through ongoing learning and development
